EKSEGESIS GRAMATIKAL-HISTORIS YUNUS 2:2: REINTEPRETASI FUNGSI IKAN BESAR SEBAGAI INSTRUMEN KESELAMATAN
Abstract
This study presents an in-depth analysis of the narrative of the prophet Jonah through a grammatical-historical exegetical approach, particularly in the text of Jonah 2:2. This analysis challenges the conventional paradigm that views the great fish as an instrument of punishment for Jonah’s escape from the divine call. By dissecting the original Hebrew linguistic structure, it is found that the use of the perfect tense verb (qatal) indicates that Jonah’s prayer in the belly of the fish is not a request for forgiveness, but rather a hymn of thanksgiving for the salvation he had experienced earlier in the depths of the sea. This chronological shift indicates that the great fish functions as a “lifeboat” sent by God to prevent Jonah’s death by drowning. The theological implications reveal that Jonah's obedience in Nineveh in chapter three is the fulfillment of a “vow” for physical salvation, not a manifestation of sincere repentance. This explains Jonah’s inconsistency in chapter four, where he rejects grace for other nations, while also emphasizing the sovereignty of God's love that transcends human religious exclusivism.References
